In December 2025, Quantum Investment BV raised its stake in Edita Food Industries to 48.75% through an EGP1.26 billion investment, and Qatar-based Baladna lifted its position in Juhayna to 15% — two landmark consolidations in the country's largest listed food names. Edita followed in January 2026 with a trademark expansion agreement alongside Hostess Brands that extends its rights across more than 45 additional African markets, and Al Ahram Beverages has committed to tripling exports by the end of 2027. The multinationals are compounding the trend: Coca-Cola HBC has announced a USD1 billion Egypt investment programme, while Kraft Heinz, Nestlé, and PepsiCo are each adding production capacity on the ground. Modern-trade infrastructure is scaling at the same pace — Kazyon has crossed one thousand stores, Carrefour is pushing toward 140 stores by 2025 with Supeco targeting 144 by 2030, Lulu is executing a USD1 billion expansion, and Spinneys will add eight new locations to its 35-store footprint in 2026. The January 2026 recall by the National Food Safety Authority of Nestlé NAN infant formula batches, after cereulide toxin was detected, underscored that even the largest multinationals face active compliance pressure — and the NFSA's willingness to act is now part of the operating reality for every producer. BMI's own assessment is blunt about the asymmetry: small producers have a hard time keeping up with international standards, particularly those required for the EU. That gap is widening as modern trade expands — hypermarkets now account for 37.1% of meals-and-soups distribution, and listings require certified suppliers with auditable infrastructure. At the same time, the export ambitions driving sector growth, from Al Ahram Beverages' tripling target to Edita's African rollout, are gated by food safety certification that most small and mid-sized producers cannot credibly reach alone.
